Our first product is our all-new midsize car and it is entering one of the most fiercely competitive segments in the market. The easy option would have been to build a vehicle that simply competes in the mainstream of the segment.
But we wanted to send a different message. We knew we had to take some bigger steps and risks to show the world that it isn't just business as usual at Mazda.
This car is designed to challenge the very best in the market. It would be wrong to call it the replacement of the Capella /626.
The only thing this car has in common is the number of doors. For this reason, Mazda's dynamic, new midsize car has a new name to match.
In Japan, it will be called "Atenza" - a word that comes from the Italian word for attention, attenzione and reflects the attention to detail featured throughout this car.
In the rest of the world this car family will be known as "Mazda 6."
The Atenza/Mazda 6 delivers high doses of what our target customers want most - that is total driving enjoyment through dynamic performance, a comprehensive/ high level safety package, and new 4 cylinder gasoline engines and latest generation, common-rail diesel engine.
Its powertrains, chassis systems, body structure and interior layout are all balanced to deliver a "no excuses" driver's car under all conditions. It is a strong statement of the new direction we are taking at Mazda Motor Corporation.
What we want to show you now is a model that displays the flexibility of our DNA, because our DNA is not just about sporty, or mainstream segment buyers. We are using our key attributes to target other segments and new customers.
