 Mazda is working hard to make care for the environment compatible with exciting driving pleasure. One major innovation is the next-generation direct-injection petrol engine, the Mazda New I4 DI. By producing tumble-a vertical vortex functioning as a virtual cavity wall-in the cylinder and injecting fuel beneath the spark plug late in the compression stroke, this engine realizes extremely efficient combustion, avoiding fuel adhesion and the cooling effect of a cavity wall, both of which occur in conventional direct-injection engines. In addition, Mazda has developed the New Catalyst System for Next Stage Rotary Engine to enable even lower emissions in the RENESIS. |

By switching between a petrol engine or a side-mount electric motor according to driving conditions, the ISG System achieves cleaner performance combined with spirited, exciting driving.  |

The five-passenger Mazda Premacy FC-EV is a fuel cell electric vehicle with extremely low emissions compared to a petrol-engine car. It is the first in Japan to be licensed for use on public roads by the Ministry of Land and Transportation, and is undergoing intensive evaluation.Mazda is also positively promoting recycling activities through its efforts to produce vehicles with easily recyclable parts. This effort is spearheaded by the company-wide "Recycling Steering Committee". Taking a wider perspective, it is extremely important to reduce exhaust gas emissions and noise, ease traffic congestion, and support safe driving through improvements in traffic systems. As a member of the ITS (intelligent transport systems) project spanning the governmental, private, and academic sectors, Mazda is forging ahead in new fields such as ASV (advanced safety vehicle), AHS (advanced highway system), and ETC (electronic toll collection) system.
