THE 36th TOKYO MOTOR SHOW 2002
High performance special use vehicles
Welfare vehicles are essential for the family outings and medical transport of disabled and elderly people. Mazda's easy-access lift-seat vehicle and low-floor wheelchair-friendly vehicles make travel pleasant for both patient and caregiver.

Already highly valued for its easy access - thanks to extremely low threshold and gentle access ramp - the Demio-i now offers the wheelchair passenger even greater safety and comfort. An exclusive headrest-equipped wheelchair protects the passenger with a three-point safety belt. And both sides of the cabin are fitted with conveniently located retractable assist grips.

For better en route communication between the driver and the wheelchair passenger, microphones and speakers are strategically placed at two points in the cabin. And a camera setup enables the driver to monitor the rear-seat passenger for safety and comfort.

For smoother access to the MPV cabin, Mazda has installed a new automatic lift mechanism for the second-row seat. One-touch remote-control operation opens the sliding door, raises the roof side, and turns the seat to move in and out, enabling even a tall passenger to enter and exit without strain.

Mazda developed an ergonomic seat, with arm and foot rests, that enables fine adjustments of body support. Pads on the seatback move up and down and another on the seat cushion moves fore and aft for comfort suited to the body shape and posture of the user.
