Advanced Technologies

Advanced technological developments for a brighter future

Mazda continuously pursues technological developments that make passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles safer and more environmentally compatible. Recent environment-oriented developments include the RENESIS hydrogen rotary engine and the clean-running, high-performance MZR-CD diesel engine. Recent safety-related developments include advanced driver-support systems that make driving safer in diverse situations.

A dual-fuel system that incorporates a gasoline tank together with a high-pressure hydrogen tank enables the RENESIS hydrogen rotary engine to run on hydrogen or gasoline with equal reliability and ease of use. Plus, engine, chassis, and body modifications necessary for operation on hydrogen are minimal, meaning that a hydrogen-capable version of a vehicle can be realized without much cost.

In the MZR-CD diesel engine, technologies including a common-rail system and an electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation system realize exceptionally low nitrogen-oxide emissions together with superior fuel economy. At the same time, a catalyzed diesel particulate filter minimizes emissions of particulate matter (PM) by capturing PM and automatically burning it off. Plus, a turbocharger contributes to superior power and torque.

Mazda Smart Safety Technology

Mazda is pursuing development of advanced driver-support technologies that make efficient use of Intelligent Transportation Systems innovations to enhance occupant protection by heightening the ability of drivers to perceive, judge, and operate their vehicles in response to road and traffic conditions and by detecting and responding to collision situations.

Adaptive Front Lighting System

When the driver performs a cornering maneuver at night, the Adaptive Front Lighting System automatically turns the headlights' low beams to the relevant side in accordance with the steering angle, thereby illuminating the curve or junction. By enhancing visibility, the system promotes safe driving.
